Tennis wins fourth Big South Tournament Championship in five seasons on Saturday
#1 Charleston Southern claimed their fourth Big South Tournament Championship in the past five seasons on Saturday defeating #3 Gardner-Webb by a 4-1 final scoreline. With the victory, the Buccaneers clinch the Big South’s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
The Buccaneers entered the weekend as the top seed after going a perfect 5-0 against Big South competition during the regular season. On Friday, CSU defeated #4 Presbyterian in the semifinals to advance to Saturday’s finals.
In the finals, Charleston Southern got the opening doubles point by claiming each of the matches. Kassandra Di Staulo and Marina Skegro won 6-2 on the #2 court which was followed by Noa Boyd and Amila Jusufbegovic clinching the point with their 6-2 victory in the topflight.
In singles, the Buccaneers got out to a dominant start in the matches. Skegro got the first decision with her 6-2, 6-1 victory on the #2 court which was followed by Emmie Moore’s 6-4, 6-1 result in the topflight. Boyd provided the championship-clinching point with her 6-1, 6-4 victory on the #3 court.
There were two matches that went unfinished while Gardner-Webb claimed the result on court #5. It was determined following the conclusion of the overall match that this court had gone final prior to Boyd’s victory, giving the Runnin’ Bulldogs their lone point.
Charleston Southern will find out the postseason fate on Monday, April 28 at 5 p.m. with the selection show to be broadcast on NCAA.com. The first and second rounds will be held on Friday, May 2 and Saturday, May 3 with campus sites serving as the hosts.
