Tekac and Singleton among award recipients at inaugural CHARLEYS awards

Charleston Southern junior place kicker Tyler Tekac and former CSU baseball star Chris Singleton were among those recognized last night at The Post and Courier’s inaugural CHARLEYS awards held at the Charleston Gaillard.

Tekac received the Mr. Clutch Award courtesy of his timely kicking prowess in clutch situations for the CSU football team this past fall. The Goose Creek, S.C. native connected on the game-winning 43-yard field goal in CSU’s 10-9 win over Gardner-Webb on November 4 with his attempt sailing through the uprights as time expired to secure the conference win. He closed out CSU’s season with the game-winning 42-yard field goal in the Bucs’ 20-19 win over Liberty in the final seconds of the contest.

Singleton, a three-year member of the CSU baseball team and 2017 Chicago Cubs draftee, was awarded the Inspiration award from The Post and Courier. “Love is always stronger than hate,” an incredible statement made by Singleton less than 24 hours after the murder of his mother while attending a Bible study at Emanuel AME church, has impacted countless lives across the Lowcountry and throughout the world.

CSU opened the doors to the Singleton Baseball Complex this spring which includes a two-story 3,500-square-foot building, a memorial plaza and a stadium courtyard. The first floor of the complex houses the Sharonda Coleman-Singleton Enrichment Center. The Sharonda Coleman-Singleton Enrichment Center celebrates her life and legacy and will serve as a gathering space for athletes to learn and grow spiritually and academically. The Enrichment Center will be the home for Fellowship of Christian Athletes gatherings, Bible studies and team-building events, instilling a sense of pride, commitment and community support in former and current members of the baseball program.

Athletes, spouses, mascots and a movie star received honors at The Post and Courier’s inaugural CHARLEYS Awards. The event recognized major sports moments and South Carolina’s leading athletes with special guest Houston Texans quarterback and former Clemson star Deshaun Watson.

The Post and Courier’s sports staff selected outstanding athletes and remarkable moments to honor at the first CHARLEYS. Recipients included South Carolina women’s basketball alum A’ja Wilson, Cincinnati Bengals A.J. Green and Academy Award nominee Bill Murray.
