Monitoring Hurricane Milton

By Jenna Johnson | October 7, 2024

Charleston Southern University will remain open for normal business operations on Thursday, Oct. 10 and Friday, Oct. 11. The CSU Emergency Management Team continues to track the path and impacts of Hurricane Milton. To ensure the safety of our CSU Family, we will update the campus by 6 a.m. on Thursday should there be any change in the current plan.

According to the National Weather Service, the Charleston area can expect some coastal flooding. This mostly impacts downtown Charleston and beach towns. There is a High Surf Advisory in effect through Friday.

Please stay updated with important announcements communicated via campuswide email, BucAlert, the website, and social media as necessary.

Stay safe, Bucs!

The Charleston Southern University Emergency Management Team continues to watch the projected path and impacts of Hurricane Milton. Though the storm is expected to hit the Florida Coast on Wednesday, the Charleston area will experience manageable effects. According to local forecasts and the National Hurricane Center, the South Carolina Lowcountry can expect coastal flooding on Thursday, with some showers and a low probability of tropical storm winds.

CSU will remain on its current operating schedule. However, should conditions warrant a change in this decision, we will alert the campus as soon as possible. Please stay updated with important announcements communicated via campuswide email, BucAlert, the website, and social media as necessary.

Stay safe, Bucs!

The Charleston Southern University Emergency Management Team is monitoring the path and projected impacts of Hurricane Milton. According to the National Hurricane Center, the storm reached Category 5 strength today and will make landfall along the Florida Peninsula late Wednesday, Oct. 9, and emerge on the Atlantic side Thursday.

Forecasters predict the center of the storm will hit the Tampa Bay region, with a slight weakening before landfall. It is likely that Milton’s path will spare locations ravaged by Hurricane Helene. The storm is likely to have little impact on the Charleston region, though coastal flooding is possible due to rising tide levels.

Additional updates are expected in the next 24 hours. As of now, CSU will remain on its current operating schedule. If the storm changes path, we will alert the campus of decisions that ensure the safety of our campus family. As always, important updates will be sent via campuswide email, with urgent releases also communicated via BucAlert, the website, and social media as necessary.

In the meantime, brush up on CSU’s emergency procedures here as well as personal emergency planning with the latest Hurricane Guide here

Remember, CSU has weathered many storms of all shapes and sizes—and our ultimate priority is the safety of our CSU Family. Stay safe, watch your inbox for updates, and pray for those in the path of this major storm as well as those recovering from Helene.
