Starting your path to becoming an athletic trainer

Athletic trainers are healthcare professionals who collaborate with physicians to provide prevention, emergency care, clinical diagnosis, therapeutic intervention and rehabilitation of injuries and medical conditions. The first professional master’s program in the state of South Carolina, Charleston Southern University’s athletic training program prepares students to become well-rounded, clinically sound, professional certified athletic trainers.

This program provides diverse, authentic and immersive clinical experiences, with biblical truths infused in the curriculum. The rigorous didactic and clinical education program spans 22 months with a strong emphasis in evidence-based clinical examination and diagnosis of injuries and illness sustained by physically active patients. In addition, the coursework and clinical experiences provide future athletic trainers with the knowledge, skills and abilities to function as an integral member of the healthcare team.

CSU also offers a 3+2 dual degree program for students who want to complete their BS in kinesiology and master of athletic training in five years. Learn more here.

The athletic training program’s mission is to provide an educational setting and opportunities that demonstrate dedication to the preparation of servant leaders that excel in the field of athletic training, grounded on an evidence-based approach. Initially accredited in 2003, the athletic training program has a history of excellence on the Board of Certification (BOC) exam and in the profession of athletic training with alumni practicing across the United States. Please refer to the CAATE Program Information and Outcomes page for programmatic information on BOC Exam pass rates, graduation and retention rates, and employment rate.
