Julie Stordahl

Dr. Julie Stordahl earned her Bachelor of Music in music education from the University of Wisconsin – Madison. She went on to earn her Master of Music (and Equivalency) in music therapy from the University of Iowa. Her research examined the song recognition and appraisal of children with cochlear implants compared to children with normal hearing. Stordahl then worked as a hospice music therapist for nearly 10 years and began her study of the Bonny Method of Guided Imagery and Music. She earned her Doctorate in music education with an emphasis in music therapy from the University of Miami. While there, her research efforts focused on improving mood and affect as well as facilitating benefit finding among women with breast cancer.

Dr. Stordahl joined the Charleston Southern family in 2010. Her research now focuses on using music and imagery techniques to reduce tension and to improve musical expression and presence among college age musicians. Other research interests include individuals with severe/advanced dementia as well as individuals with substance use disorders. She continues her study of the Bonny Method of Guided Imagery and Music. In addition to her work at Charleston Southern, Dr. Stordahl serves as the music director at her church.
