Timothy Banks is an award-winning educator, illustrator, designer, and visual artist with over 25 years of professional experience. He has also worked as a creative director and owner of a successful graphic design agency, in addition to his extensive career as a gallery artist and illustrator. His whimsical and expressive style has earned him recognition in significant publications and competitions, and his work has been featured in books, editorial pieces, and advertising campaigns.
Timothy holds an MFA from the Savannah College of Art & Design and has been a professor at Charleston Southern University since 2017. He previously taught at the College of Charleston and the Art Institute of Charleston, where he helped shape the next generation of designers and illustrators. At CSU, he integrates faith and creativity in the classroom, fostering an environment where students develop technical skills and ethical foundations for their careers. He goes beyond traditional instruction by providing mentorship, real-world insights, and guidance on building strong portfolios. Many of his students have gone on to lead design agencies, work as illustrators, and establish themselves as celebrated gallery artists.
His teaching approach includes hands-on projects, industry-driven curriculum, and a commitment to student success that extends beyond graduation. He remains actively involved in his students’ careers, offering ongoing mentorship and professional connections.
Outside academia, Timothy continues his work as a picture book illustrator and fine artist. His art can be seen at timothybanks.com, and his Instagram account, @timbanks, showcases his latest projects.
Timothy’s mission at Charleston Southern is to inspire and equip students to become purpose-driven creatives who use their talents to make a meaningful impact in their fields and communities.
Your Purpose. Our Mission.
My mission at Charleston Southern is to mentor and equip students with the creative, technical, and professional skills they need to thrive as artists and designers while integrating faith and ethical principles into their work. I strive to create an environment where students feel inspired, supported, and challenged to develop their unique voices. Through personalized mentorship, real-world insights, and a commitment to excellence, I help students bridge the gap between education and industry. Beyond the classroom, I continue to support their careers, guiding them as they become leaders in design, illustration, and the arts. My ultimate goal is to shape thoughtful, purpose-driven creatives who use their talents to make a meaningful impact in their fields and communities.
