South Carolina Earthquake Preparedness Week

By Kaia Thomson | October 18, 2024

Did you know that South Carolina experiences 10-20 earthquakes per year? Thankfully, the majority of these earthquakes cause little damage, but it is always important to be prepared. The majority of these earthquakes happen in our local area, the Coastal Plain, clustered around three areas: Ravenel-Adams Run-Hollywood, Middleton Place-Summerville, and Bowman.

October 13 – 19 is South Carolina Earthquake Preparedness Week 2024. Here are a few tips to remember in case of emergency.

  1. DROP to the ground
  2. COVER your head and neck while you crawl to shelter. You can do this with a book, by going under a desk, or with another object that is nearby.
  3. HOLD ON to your shelter until the shaking stops

It is also beneficial to have some disaster supplies on hand that can last for about three days. If you have any questions or want to learn more about earthquake safety you can find more information here
