Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) Detachment 772 is home to the Flying Bucs on the campus of Charleston Southern University. We specialize in providing an exciting and engaging officer training program that ensures you receive all of the attention and training you will need to become a successful Air Force or Space Force Officer.
AFROTC Mission: to develop leaders of character for tomorrow’s Air Force and Space Force.
To participate in our program, you must be a full-time undergraduate or graduate student at Charleston Southern University, the College of Charleston, Charleston School of Law, Medical University of South Carolina, or Trident Technical College. If you are not enrolled at Charleston Southern University, please ensure that you reach out to your Registar Advisor for more information on how to join the Air Force ROTC program. As part of our program, you will be given opportunities to develop leadership skills, become a dynamic follower, and be an effective manager. This is done to ensure we commission Second Lieutenants into the Air Force and Space Force who have demonstrated sound leadership characteristics and met Air Force ROTC and degree requirements.

Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) is a college program offered at more than 1,100 campuses across the country. It prepares young men and women to become leaders in the Air Force and Space Force, but it’s also much more. You’ll grow mentally and physically as you acquire strong leadership skills that will benefit you as an Air Force and Space Force Officer and in life. It’s also a great opportunity to pay for school through scholarships. You’ll develop lifelong friendships and have unique experiences. In 1971, Air Force ROTC Detachment 772, at Charleston Southern University (then Baptist College) was established as a four year program, training quality leaders for the Air Force through their ROTC program. In 1978, our Detachment switched to a two-year program only accepting college juniors and commissioning an average of 5 officers per year. Although we were the smallest Air Force ROTC program in the nation, we were recognized as the Best Small Detachment in the Southeast Region in 2000, 2001, 2007 and 2009. Other awards include, AFROTC outstanding unit award 2018, and Best AFROTC Detachment in South Carolina 2019. Starting in the fall term of 2016, our training program transitioned back to a four-year program, joining the other 144 detachments in the country in accepting freshman and sophomore entry cadets.
It takes something unique to succeed in Air Force ROTC. It takes dedication, drive, and discipline. Our program is structured to foster the work ethic and principles that will help students not only succeed in school but also prepare them for life as exceptional citizens and members of the U.S. Air Force and U.S. Space Force. Our program is structured like a college course that focuses on developing leaders. You will be taught by a world-class Air Force faculty supplemented with distinguished speakers who bring policy and history to life through firsthand experience. Each instructor is an Air Force Officer and is usually accorded the academic rank of assistant professor. The unit commander has an academic rank of full professor.
Since the goal of the program is to help students earn placement as an Officer in the U.S. Air Force or U.S. Space Force, you will need to meet certain requirements along the way to help you ensure future success in the U.S. Air Force and U.S. Space Force. What if you didn’t have to worry about how to pay for college? Air Force ROTC offers a variety of scholarships that will help relieve the financial burden of your college education. That way, you can focus on preparing for your future.
A variety of full and partial scholarships are available, and certain scholarships have specific requirements. Air Force ROTC scholarships cover full or partial tuition and most lab fees. It also includes an annual textbook allowance and up to a $500 spending cash monthly stipend.
