CSU offers board rebate to residential students
Charleston Southern University announced early Monday to its campus community that all currently registered residential students will receive a prorated board rebate for the spring 2020 semester. The credit will be calculated based on actual food service costs eliminated from the date the student vacated the residence hall—in most cases, Monday, March 16, 2020.
Credits for students who received financial aid awards to cover room and board charges will be reduced by the amount of those awards. The rebate will be applied first to any outstanding student account balances and remaining credit balances will be applied to the next academic term. Graduating seniors will receive a check for any remaining credit balance. See the following FAQs for additional information.
Frequently Asked Questions
- How does the board rebate work?
Board rebates will be applied first to any outstanding balance on a student account. If a credit balance results following the board rebate, it will carry forward to be applied to expenses in a future term, either summer or fall 2020. Graduating seniors will receive a refund check for any credit balance.
- What about a room charge rebate?
While Charleston Southern University is proceeding with board charge rebates for the spring 2020 semester, we are unable to finalize the room charge rebate process until we receive governmental guidance regarding proper distribution of federal funds. We will post additional details as soon as they are available and will provide any room charge rebates soon thereafter.
- When will rebates or refund checks be issued/received?
Due to the rapidly changing nature of the COVID-19 situation, it has not yet been determined when board rebates and any resulting refund checks will be available. We are working to process these as quickly as possible but it will likely be several weeks before checks will be sent to graduating seniors. We will continue to provide you with further updates.
- I’ll be living off campus next year. Will my board rebate be applied to tuition?
Yes. Board rebates will be available toward any charges incurred in the next term in which a student enrolls (summer or fall 2020). They do not have to apply just to future room and board charges.
- What if I don’t return next semester?
Students other than graduating seniors who do not return in summer or fall 2020 are still eligible for the rebate. If the rebate results in a credit balance on the student’s account, the university will process refund checks for those students beginning October 1, 2020.
- I would rather have a refund check than a credit toward future charges. Is this possible?
Refund checks will be processed only to graduating seniors within the next few weeks. For any other students with a resulting credit balance on their accounts, refund checks will be processed next fall.
- I’m paying interest on student loans. Can I get a refund check rather than a credit so that I can pay on my loans?
Refund checks will be processed only to graduating seniors within the next few weeks. For any other students with a resulting credit balance on their accounts, refund checks will be processed next fall.
The federal government is offering various relief opportunities for federal student loans, including suspending interest and payments. Please visit studentaid.gov/announcements-events/coronavirus for further information.
- Will credits be applied to summer?
Yes. Board rebates will be applied to the next term in which a student incurs expenses, either summer or fall 2020.
- I’m graduating but returning as a graduate student this fall. Can my rebate be applied to graduate school?
Credit balances will be issued as refund checks to graduating seniors. If you wish to apply your credit toward fall 2020 graduate charges, please contact the Student Accounts Office at student_accounts@csuniv.edu and they can assist you further.
- Will board rebates be prorated based on actual usage?
No. The board rebate will be based on the remaining weeks in the term after the student departs from campus.
- Will a rebate be issued for commuter dining dollars?
Yes. As is the case in all major semesters, any commuter dining dollars remaining at the end of the term will be applied back to the student’s account. If a credit balance of greater than $75 results, a refund check will be automatically issued after the end of the term. If a credit balance of $75 or less results, you may request a refund check be processed by contacting student_accounts@csuniv.edu.
- I won’t be going home but will be staying on campus. Will I receive the board rebate?
Students who have been granted an exception to stay in campus housing for the remainder of the semester will not receive the board rebate. Students who do not return to live in campus housing following the extended spring break will receive the board rebate regardless of their move-out date.
Refund Questions Other Than Housing & Meal Plans
- Will there be any refunds other than board rebates due to completing the semester online rather than on campus?
There will be no reimbursement for charges or fees, other than those outlined for room and board charges. Instruction will continue online, and resources are being reallocated to accommodate the many changes brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic.
- Tuition
There are no refunds for tuition. Instruction is moving online for the remainder of the semester. Accommodations are being made to allow completion of all courses.
- Graduation fee
Income from the graduation fee is used to offset the various expenses related to commencement. Although commencement will not be held May 9, it has not been canceled. Completion fees will be reallocated to the expenses related to virtual commencement as well as future events being planned to honor our 2020 graduates.
- I am currently enrolled in a payment plan. Do I need to continue to make my payments or wait for the room and board rebates to be applied?
Rebates for room and board will first be applied to any outstanding student account balances. Payment plans will then be adjusted following the application of these credits. Students will be billed for the remainder of the payments due on their payment plans following these adjustments.
- I will still owe a balance even after the board rebate is applied. When do I need to make a payment, and how much?
We understand that you want to know what your balance will be. If you want help determining your remaining charges, please contact the Student Accounts Office at student_accounts@csuniv.edu.
- I owe a balance and am unable to make payments during these uncertain times. Can you work with me?
Absolutely. We understand these are uncertain times and that many students and families may find it difficult to pay their student account right now. Please pay what you can as you are able. We are waiving late fees on payment plans through June to assist families with flexible payment needs.
If you owe a balance for the 2019-2020 year and need to know your options for assistance, please contact the Financial Aid Office by email at financialaid@csuniv.edu by May 1, 2020.
