CSU offers board rebate to residential students

By CSU Media | April 6, 2020

Charleston Southern University announced early Monday to its campus community that all currently registered residential students will receive a prorated board rebate for the spring 2020 semester. The credit will be calculated based on actual food service costs eliminated from the date the student vacated the residence hall—in most cases, Monday, March 16, 2020.

Credits for students who received financial aid awards to cover room and board charges will be reduced by the amount of those awards. The rebate will be applied first to any outstanding student account balances and remaining credit balances will be applied to the next academic term. Graduating seniors will receive a check for any remaining credit balance. See the following FAQs for additional information.

Board rebates will be applied first to any outstanding balance on a student account. If a credit balance results following the board rebate, it will carry forward to be applied to expenses in a future term, either summer or fall 2020. Graduating seniors will receive a refund check for any credit balance.

While Charleston Southern University is proceeding with board charge rebates for the spring 2020 semester, we are unable to finalize the room charge rebate process until we receive governmental guidance regarding proper distribution of federal funds. We will post additional details as soon as they are available and will provide any room charge rebates soon thereafter.

Due to the rapidly changing nature of the COVID-19 situation, it has not yet been determined when board rebates and any resulting refund checks will be available. We are working to process these as quickly as possible but it will likely be several weeks before checks will be sent to graduating seniors. We will continue to provide you with further updates.

Yes. Board rebates will be available toward any charges incurred in the next term in which a student enrolls (summer or fall 2020). They do not have to apply just to future room and board charges.

Students other than graduating seniors who do not return in summer or fall 2020 are still eligible for the rebate. If the rebate results in a credit balance on the student’s account, the university will process refund checks for those students beginning October 1, 2020.

Refund checks will be processed only to graduating seniors within the next few weeks. For any other students with a resulting credit balance on their accounts, refund checks will be processed next fall.

Students who have been granted an exception to stay in campus housing for the remainder of the semester will not receive the board rebate. Students who do not return to live in campus housing following the extended spring break will receive the board rebate regardless of their move-out date.

Refund Questions Other Than Housing & Meal Plans

There will be no reimbursement for charges or fees, other than those outlined for room and board charges. Instruction will continue online, and resources are being reallocated to accommodate the many changes brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic.

There are no refunds for tuition. Instruction is moving online for the remainder of the semester. Accommodations are being made to allow completion of all courses.

Income from the graduation fee is used to offset the various expenses related to commencement. Although commencement will not be held May 9, it has not been canceled. Completion fees will be reallocated to the expenses related to virtual commencement as well as future events being planned to honor our 2020 graduates.

Rebates for room and board will first be applied to any outstanding student account balances. Payment plans will then be adjusted following the application of these credits. Students will be billed for the remainder of the payments due on their payment plans following these adjustments.

We understand that you want to know what your balance will be. If you want help determining your remaining charges, please contact the Student Accounts Office at student_accounts@csuniv.edu.

Absolutely. We understand these are uncertain times and that many students and families may find it difficult to pay their student account right now. Please pay what you can as you are able. We are waiving late fees on payment plans through June to assist families with flexible payment needs.
