In anticipation of the impacts of winter weather, Charleston Southern University will pivot to online learning and close campus offices starting at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, January 21 through Wednesday, January 22. Students scheduled to attend in-person classes should login to Blackboard for further instruction. Though all on-campus, in-person events are cancelled, dining services will remain available for residents. Follow the Dining Services Instagram for updates on locations and hours. For updated athletic schedules, check csusports.com.
With the exception of essential personnel and the dining hall, all offices and buildings will be closed on Tuesday evening through Wednesday. Employees should discuss remote work options with their supervisor, including school district early release schedules for those with children.
CSU plans to resume normal operations on Thursday, January 23. We will send additional updates should there be any change in the forecast or road safety conditions.
Latest Forecast
A winter storm is in effect for much of the South Carolina Lowcountry from Tuesday afternoon through Wednesday morning. Heavy snow is possible, with accumulation expected between one and three inches.
According to local forecasters, our area should plan for dangerous road conditions. The freezing temperatures Wednesday night could result in refreezing and black ice on roadways into Thursday morning.
Cold Weather Tips
Prepare for cold weather:
- Fill up your gas tank.
- Protect your pets and know the temperature threshold of your plants.
- Charge your cell phone and other electronic devices. Keep a charged power bank ready in case of power outages.
- Have essential items that can sustain your families for at least three days, including non-perishable food, water, medications, flashlights and batteries, etc.
- Keep kerosene heaters and generators outside, properly vented – never use a portable generator indoors.
While indoors:
- Ensure doors and windows are shut to keep warm air in and cold air out.
- Allow faucets to drip slowly and open cabinet doors below sinks to allow warm air circulation for pipes.
- Keep thermostats at a reasonable temperature (above 60 degrees).
- If on campus, report leaking or ruptured pipes to Facilities immediately.
While outdoors:
- Layer clothing! Outer garments should be water repellant. Wear a hat and mittens.
- Cover your mouth with a scarf – this protects your face and, most importantly, your lungs.
- If traveling in a vehicle, take extra blankets and clothing; consider a winter car survival kit.
- Watch for ice while walking or driving.
- Use extreme caution on bridges and less-traveled roads during icy conditions.
For additional safety tips, go to the National Weather Service website.
Please remain vigilant in monitoring local weather updates as well as the latest BucAlert announcements.
