Being thankful this Christmas

By Kaitlyn Conner | December 6, 2024

Most holidays can be hectic and strenuous for people, which can often lead to arguments. Sometimes your relatives know how to push your buttons. This Christmas, try to refocus on being thankful and bringing joy to the world.

Charleston Southern University’s Associate Vice President for Spiritual Life, Jon Davis, brought a new perspective toward traditional methods of giving back this holiday season. “Being thankful is about recognizing our transformation of being loved and having love by the Holy Spirit,” he said. “It can be hard to focus on joy, and we can often feel defined by our families. Remember, you are not defined by your family, but by Jesus Christ who gives you joy.”

We as Christians can spread the light by doing good deeds, but remember to spread why we are serving as well. Davis said, “Just being thankful stops, but the why is the key, and the why will keep on giving.”

Time to be Thankful

During the holidays, it can be easy to forget the reason for the season.

This Christmas, try these tips to have a thankful holiday:

  • Tip 1: Pray

Sometimes holidays can be challenging, so spend time praying and bringing all anxieties to Him. Having a calm state of mind can help remind us to be thankful for everyone, even those tricky relatives.

  • Tip 2: Take time to appreciate the little things

Take a second to look around the room and name something different with each of the five senses. Take this time to find joy and gratefulness in everything around you.

  • Tip 3: Listen more than you speak

Spending time with people who are distant relatives and often have different views can be hard. Take time to be like Jesus by listening to what is said and trying to understand their point of view.

  • Tip 4: Remember the image of God

When involved in a heated discussion with a family member, try to remember that everyone is created in the image and likeness of God. Everyone deserves to be treated with love and respect.
