Dr. Courtney Freer is the Provost’s Postdoctoral Fellow at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia after serving as an assistant professorial research fellow at the Middle East Centre at the London School of Economics and Political Science since 2015. She is also a nonresident fellow in the Foreign Policy program at the Brookings Institution.Her academic work focuses on the domestic politics of the Arab Gulf states, particularly the political role of Islamism. She received a doctorate in politics from the University of Oxford in 2015. She is the author of Rentier Islamism: The Influence of the Muslim Brotherhood in Gulf Monarchies, two other titles, and many published articles, book chapters, and reviews. She previously worked at the Brookings Doha Center in Qatar and received her bachelor’s degree from Princeton University and a master’s degree from George Washington University.
