The Charleston Southern University family mourns the passing of Thomas Walter “Walt” Brashier, age 86, Wednesday, March 24 in Greenville.

Brashier was a longtime supporter of Charleston Southern and was a Life Member of the President’s Silver Club, was a member of the Board of Visitors Scholarship Program since 1992, and established The Dr. T. Walter Brashier Family Endowed Scholarship in 1998 to honor his family.

Reflecting on Brashier’s life, CSU President Dondi Costin said, “Walt Brashier was one of a kind, and in many ways was God’s gift to Charleston Southern when the university needed him the most. As an entrepreneur and an evangelist, he advanced the cause of Christ by giving of himself and his resources so that others could meet the Lord and serve Him with gladness. Like Paul the apostle, Walt seized every day knowing that ‘to live is Christ and to die is gain.’ Because he was right on both points, our loss is heaven’s gain, and Walt’s legacy will endure forever.”

President and CEO of T. Walter Brashier & Associates, Brashier and his wife, Christine, generously donated to numerous colleges in the state. In recognition of his passion for education and Christian leadership, Charleston Southern awarded him an honorary doctor of humanities degree in 1977.

His numerous awards included the Order of the Palmetto, the highest honor for civilians in the state of South Carolina. Brashier was a graduate of Furman University and attended Erskine Theological Seminary and Southeastern Theological Seminary.
